Bank Switch Rules & Checklist: Pay-ins, Card Spend & Exclusions

A practical guide to clearing bank switch hurdles: pay-in recycling tricks, debit card spend shortcuts, app activation, and staying eligible.

Published · By Editorial

Finding a bank switch offer worth £200 is exciting, but reading through pages of terms and conditions can feel overwhelming.

Banks don’t make these rules to trick you — they design them to filter out automated bots and ensure that joiners are real people. Fortunately, every condition can be cleared quickly if you know the simple workarounds.

Here is your complete guide to clearing every standard switch requirement.

1. The Minimum Pay-In Requirement

Many offers specify a minimum deposit requirement within the first 30 or 60 days. For example: “Pay in £1,500 within 60 days of account opening.”

Do you actually need £1,500 in savings?

No. Banks measure total cumulative deposits, not your account balance.

The “Money Cycle” Trick:

If an offer requires a £1,500 deposit and you only have £500 available:

  1. Transfer £500 from your main bank account into your new account via Faster Payments.
  2. Transfer that £500 back out to your main bank account.
  3. Repeat 3 times (£500 x 3 = £1,500 total deposit).

The bank’s automated tracking system registers £1,500 in total incoming credits, completely satisfying the criteria.

2. Debit Card Transaction Requirements

Some banks (like TSB, Co-op, or Santander) require you to make 5 or 10 debit card payments within 30 days.

If you don’t use the card for your everyday shopping, you can knock out these card spends in under 5 minutes using these shortcuts:

  • Amazon Account Balance Top-ups: Top up your Amazon gift card balance with 5 separate £1 transactions (£1 x 5).
  • Self-Checkout at Supermarkets: Scan 5 items individually at a supermarket self-checkout (e.g. 5 single bananas or bakery items) and pay separately for each.
  • Council Tax / Utility Top-ups: Make 5 separate £1 card payments towards your council tax or energy bill online.

Note: Bank transfers or PayPal peer-to-peer transfers do not count as debit card payments. The transaction must use the 16-digit debit card number.

3. App Activation & Digital Banking Rules

A growing number of modern switch offers require you to:

  1. Log into their official mobile app within 30 days of opening.
  2. Register for paperless statements / online communications.

This is the easiest step, but don’t forget it! Download the app as soon as your account is approved, complete ID verification, and turn on mobile notifications.

4. Former Customer & Group Exclusion Rules

The most common reason for missing out on a payout is applying when you’re excluded by past account history.

Banks typically enforce two types of exclusions:

Time-Based Exclusions

“You are not eligible if you have received a switch bonus from us since 1st January 2022.” Always check your personal switch log before applying. If your previous switch bonus was paid before their cutoff date, you are eligible again!

Banking Group Exclusions

Some banks share customer databases across parent brands. For example:

  • Lloyds Banking Group: Lloyds Bank, Bank of Scotland, Halifax.
  • NatWest Group: NatWest, Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS), Ulster Bank.
  • HSBC Group: HSBC, First Direct.

If NatWest states “Must not have received a switch bonus from NatWest, RBS, or Ulster Bank since 2023”, receiving a bonus from RBS in 2024 will disqualify you from the NatWest deal.

Summary Checklist for Every Switch

  • Pay-in Completed: Have I deposited (or recycled) the required total deposit amount?
  • Card & App Requirements Done: Have I completed any required card payments and app logins?
